When Do Bugs Play?

By Nancy Ross Ryan

I went to ask my friends the bugs,
"What did you do today?"
And all the bugs I picked to ask
Had something new to say.

The ant said, "I worked on my hill.
You see that I am working still."

The bees said, "We made honey sweet.
And now it's very good to eat!"

From field to field, the crickets hopped.
They said, "You see, we just can't stop!"

A spider said, "Eight hands work fast.
My house is very clean at last!"

"Do you bugs always work?" I asked.
"Don't you have time to play?
How can you look so happy when
you work the day away?"

"We like to work so much," they said.
"We work in rain and sun.
It only looks like work to you,
but we are having fun!"
